SAFETY NOTICE HS1 ELECTRODES

Philips has identified a problem with the electrodes of the HeartStart HS-1 AEDs. It concerns the M5071A (adult) and M5072A (infant/child) electrodes.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

In rare cases, the gel on AED electrodes has been known to separate from the foam/foil backing when removed from the yellow plastic liner. The gel can fold back on itself, reducing the gel surface area on the electrode. It is also possible for the gel to separate almost completely, leaving only a small amount of gel on the electrode. Whether this problem occurs with your electrodes is not possible to know, as the electrodes are protected by a foil seal.

Since 2010, Philips has received 115 complaints about this issue (84 complaints were received in 2021) for a total of approximately 5 million shipments of M5071A and M5072A electrodes.

WHAT ACTION SHOULD THE AED USER TAKE NOW?

Philips recommends that you continue to use the AED. The pads can be applied to the patient as normal, unless the gel has almost completely separated from the backing. In the event of a problem, install spare pads, if available, and continue the rescue. Philips recommends that you keep a spare pads cartridge with your HS1 OnSite/HS1 Home AED. If the problem persists and you do not have a spare pads cartridge, care for the patient and perform CPR as needed until emergency services arrive.

Note: The problem may still occur on later deliveries until custom electrodes are available.

WHAT WILL PHILIPS DO ABOUT IT?

In the course of this year, Philips will introduce new electrodes to solve the problem with the M5071A and M5072A electrodes. In addition, everyone with an HS1 AED, 10 years old or younger, will receive a free new set of electrodes from Philips. This ensures that you have an electrode set that meets 100% of the high quality requirements. This also means that no new Philips HeartStart HS-1 AED devices will be delivered until the new electrodes are available. This means that customers who have already ordered or want to order an HS-1 AED will have to be patient for at least a few more months.
